Charity Donations Explained
A charity accepts donations from individuals, businesses and organizations and uses the money to assist others. Each charity has a focus that describes how the donations are used. For example, Unicef advocates for children and assists them in receiving proper schooling and having a safe living environment.
Other charities may assist animals or raise money for research to find more effective treatments for a disease. The Red Cross is focused on helping others cope with crisis situations and being prepared for disasters. They provide disaster relief as well as train people in first aid and CPR. The focus of the charity is outlined in their mission statement.
Humanitarian aid is assistance that is given to groups of people who find themselves without food, water or shelter. The cause of their suffering can be political, religious or cultural persecution or a natural disaster. Americares and HOPE Worldwide are examples of charities that provide humanitarian aid.
When selecting a charity to give donations to, many people choose a charity because they respect the work of the charity. A person who is concerned about children in poor nations may want to donate to Christian Children’s Fund to help them. In this way, the person feels like they are helping the children.
The individual might choose a charity with which they can relate. Family members of a cancer survivor may choose to donate to charities that financially support cancer research. Pet owners may decide to donate to charities that help animals.
The personal connection that the donor feels with the charity is important for both the donor and the charity. A donor who believes strongly in the charity’s cause will feel personally invested in giving to the charity as a way to fight for the cause.
If the donor has a special interest in the cause of the charity, the person may feel proud of their donations. The charity benefits from the individual who takes a special interest in their charity, because they donate more frequent or donate larger amounts than their usual donations.
Another consideration to make when selecting a charity is the financial efficiency of the charity. How much of the money that is donated goes to the activities of the charity? If a large portion of the charity donations are used for administrative costs, there may be very little benefit passed on to the recipients of the charity.
The administrative costs include the employees’ salaries, offices and marketing materials. Before making a donation, the individual may want to research the financial efficiency of the charity. The charity should be able to tell potential donors the percentage of the donations that go to administrative costs.
A potential donor may want to check on the Internet for reviews of the charity. If the research indicates that the charity is a fiscally responsible one and the donor believes in the charity’s mission statement, the charity may be a good fit for the donor.
