A Gift for Ron: Friendship and Sacrifice On and Off the Gridiron

A Gift for Ron: Friendship and Sacrifice On and Off the Gridiron

$19.99

After thirteen seasons as an NFL star, Everson Walls retired to his hometown of Dallas, Texas. He and former Cowboys teammate Ron Springs worked together on charities, their families became close, and they became godfathers to each other’s children. But, as time passed, Ron could no longer conceal the ravaging effects of his diabetes. Before Walls knew it, his friend’s simple medical procedures had become amputations and dialysis. It didn’t matter that Ron was a former football star. It didn’t matter that he was still full of life. Ron was like everyone else in the dialysis center: He was dying. In A Gift for Ron, Walls tells the moving story of how he witnessed the suffering of Ron and his family. He also recounts their years of friendship against the backdrop of their football careers. Ron had always been willing, never afraid, to take up someone else’s cause. Regardless of the consequences. Walls was to remember this life lesson on the day he heard that a potential kidney donor had fallen through for his friend—and also learned that he and Ron shared something truly precious: a blood type. Bolstered by his faith, Walls finally understood his only option—to donate a kidney to save his friend’s life.Ultimately, A Gift for Ron is much more than the story of two pro football stars. It is about being a teammate, being a leader, being a friend. Most of all, it is about how one friend made another realize that to be lucky in life does not necessarily mean to receive gifts, but to be able to give them.

Breastfeeding Advocacy: Nestl Boycott, Breastfeeding in Public, Mom’s Breastaurant, Lactivism

$8.78

Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Nestlé boycott is a boycott launched on July 4, 1977, in the United States against the Swiss based Nestlé corporation. It spread quickly throughout the United States, and expanded into Europe in the early 1980s. It was prompted by concern about the company’s marketing of breast milk substitutes (infant formula), particularly in less economically developed countries (LEDCs), which campaigners claim contributes to the unnecessary death and suffering of babies, largely among the poor. Among the campaigners, Professor Derek Jelliffe and his wife Patrice, who had contributed to establish the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), were particularly instrumental in helping to coordinate the boycott and giving it ample visibility throughout the world. Groups such as the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN), and Save the Children claim that the promotion of infant formula over breast-feeding has led to health problems and deaths among infants in less economically developed countries. There are four problems that can arise when poor mothers in developing countries switch to formula: Advocacy groups and charities have accused Nestlé of unethical methods of promoting infant formula over breast-milk to poor mothers in developing countries. For example, IBFAN claim that Nestlé supports the distribution of free powdered formula samples to hospitals and maternity wards; after leaving the hospital, the formula is no longer free, but because the supplementation has interfered with lactation the family must continue to buy the formula. IBFAN also allege that Nestlé uses “humanitarian aid” to create markets, does not label its products in a language appropriate to the country where they are sold, and offers gifts and sponsorship to

Caring and Coping: A Guide to Social Services

Caring and Coping: A Guide to Social Services

$200

Caring and Coping provides a clear and accessible explanation of the history, politics, management, funding and day-to-day work of the social services in Britain. Social Care now encompasses a wide range of increasingly specialised professions. Caring and Coping aims to improve the practitioner’s (and the general public’s) understanding not only of what these various professions do, but also what the legal, political, ethical and financial constraints are upon them. It succinctly addresses issues such as:* the terms and effects of the Children Act and the Community Care Act* the role of charities in the modern welfare state* the role of management* relationships with other agencies* and the place of social work within the community. Social services are so often portrayed in the media in a sensationalist way and this book counterbalances the hype by providing solid research and a more down-to-earth picture. It is an ideal introductory text for those training to be social workers.
